A urological procedure used as a method of sterilization. Involves division and obliteration of the vas deferens – the tube transmitting the sperm cells from the testis to the penis.

The procedure can be performed through a 1cm cut on either side of the scrotum as a day case procedure.

Two negative sperm counts are required so that the procedure is considered successful.
A barrier method of contraception should be used until then.

Vasectomy should be considered to be an irreversible procedure, although vasectomy reversal can be performed.
